As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.

Submission of papers

Manuscripts should be in English. Submitting a paper implies that it HAS NOT been previously published, nor is it under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted, it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher. Manuscripts should be prepared in standard work processing formats such as MS WORD, PDF or Latex. Authors should submit an electronic copy of their paper on disc with the final version of the manuscript. The electronic copy should match the hard copy exactly. (Both hardcopy and soft copy formats required)

Types of contributions

Research reports; critical reviews; viewpoint articles, case studies, and technical papers. This should be clearly indicated in articles.

Manuscript preparation

General: Manuscripts must be typewritten, single-spaced, with 1’’ margins on the sides. Printouts should be of font size of 12 pt. Articles should be no more than 10 pages (when single-spaced) or approximately between 2500-7500 words. 

Articles not meeting these requirements shall not be accepted

Title: Should be precise 

Abstract: It should not exceed 200 words. It should capture background information, objectives, methods, findings, and practical implications, where applicable.

Keywords: Authors are asked to provide up to six keywords (immediately after the abstract) that describe the scope of the article. At least one of these must be from a disaster related area.

Text: The order of preparing manuscripts should be: title, authors, affiliations, abstract, keywords, main text (including tables), acknowledgements, appendix, references, and figures. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and a footnote. Avoid endnotes in the text.

Headings and subtitles: Must be short, clearly defined

References: All cited publications in the text should be presented in a list of references. Generally use the APA or Harvard referencing style

Tables: Number them consecutively with a suitable caption for each

Illustrations: Photographs, charts, and diagrams will all be referred to as ‘ figures’ and should be provided in soft-copy form, suitable for reproduction without editing. They should, however, be kept minimal and in black and white. They should be clearly marked with the figure number and must have a caption. NB: except for on-line edition, the printed edition of the journal has no subsidy for colour images/ pages, and authors wishing their figures to appear in colour should consult Editorial office for additional charges (author will be charged at the current colour printing costs)

Acceptance and review

Once a manuscript is submitted, the Chief Editor will evaluate it for its suitability in terms of content and relevance to the journal’s area of scope. Once accepted, it will be passed onto at least two or three Peer reviewers approved by the editorial board for blind peer review. Proofs will be sent to the first named author (if no corresponding author is identified of multi-authored papers) and should be returned within 1 week of receipt
